Our 2024-25 season opens with an exciting young string quartet from Spain who are on their first UK-wide tour.

Please note the new start time of 7.30pm for this and all of our concerts this season!

Tonight's programme contrasts the work of established cornerstones of the quartet repertoire by two masters of the genre, Haydn and Schubert, with less well-known early pieces by two great British composers from very different time periods.

The Atenea Quartet was founded in 2019 in Barcelona. An internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to exploring the vast string quartet repertoire, they were finalists in the 2023 Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) international auditions, and are currently based in Basel, Switzerland.

Renowned for their performances of classical and contemporary works, the quartet has received numerous awards, including the 'Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes 2023', first prizes in the Competition el Primer Palau 2022 and Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition 2021, among others.

In the 2023-24 season the quartet are taking part in numerous international competitions, including the Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition, Borciani String Quartet Competition and the Geneva String Quartet Competition.

The quartet has been invited to prestigious festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, the Barcelona String Quartet Biennial, the Schubertíada de Vilabertran, the Musikdorf Ernen Festival, the Kulturfest Resonanzen Sils, the Wissembourg International Music Festival, Festival d’Aix en Provence and the Juan March Foundation. They have also premiered works by composers like Raquel García-Tomás, Antoni Ros-Marbà, and Mauro Hertig. Future engagements also include a recital at the Festival de Barcelona Obertura.

Currently the ensemble are continuing their musical training at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW in Basel, under the guidance of Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Silvia Simionescu (Gringolts Quartet), Claudio Martínez Mehner, Anton Kernjak and Anna Gebert.

The Atenea Quartet are supported by the Young Classical Artists Trust, YCAT.

REVIEWS

“The Atenea Quartet’s impressive performance of their program was persuasive and inspiring. I am very much looking forward to their Debut concert at our Summer Festival...Like numerous previous winners of the ‘Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes', these musicians fulfill all of the prerequisites necessary for an international career and have a promising future ahead of them.”
