Sat 29th October 2011CELEBRITY CONCERT
The Nash Ensemble
Ian Watson, piano Stephanie Gonley, violin Laura Samuel, violin Lawrence Power, viola Paul Watkins, cello
“The Nash’s playing is a treasure in the crowded London concert scene”. The Independent
The Nash Ensemble has built up a remarkable international reputation, since its foundation by Amelia Freedman, in 1964, as one of Britain’s finest and most adventurous chamber groups. The repertoire is vast, and the imaginative, innovative, and unusual programmes are “as finely wrought as the beautiful Nash terraces in London from which it takes it’s name.” The group has also premiered more than 260 new works.
The performers, (all of whom have busy solo, recording and/or conducting careers,) are already known to us: Ian Brown who came to play for us with the Nash in their first visit, almost 20 years ago; Laura Samuel, who came with the now famous Belcea Quartet; Lawrence Power, who gave us a wonderful viola recital last season, and Paul Watkins, cello, who first played for us in his YMS string quartet, and subsequently gave us a solo recital, and then reappeared with the Bridge quartet for a quintet performance of Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet. He divides his time between conducting, chamber music and solo cello concert performances. Stephanie Gonley has appeared as soloist with many orchestras and as both Director and soloist of the English Chamber Orchestra.
“In an exceptional concert the Nash showed why they are among today’s outstanding and enterprising groups.” -The Independent
Amelia Freedman’s specially designed programmes have included series about Beethoven and the Russians; Dvorak, Josef Suk and Brahms; Schubert, his friends and contemporaries, etc.,
“…a concert that left one uplifted and enriched.” Daily Telegraph
This concert, specially designed for OCMS, includes some of the greatest, most beautiful, tuneful and exciting music in the Chamber music repertoire.- wonderful and demanding writing for both Strings and Piano. You will go home with tunes in your head, an excitement within yourself, and the knowledge that you have heard and experienced a memorable event. It is a remarkable, joyful programme to which young and older people will respond. Don’t miss it!!
